DeMarco Murray: Titans move on

"I want to thank DeMarco for his contributions as a Titan, not only for what he did on the field but also in the locker room and in the community", Titans General Manager Jon Robinson said in a statement.

There is no dead money on Murray's contract and the Titans will save $6.25 million against the salary cap with the move, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

In Murray's past year with Dallas, he led the National Football League in rushing attempts (392), rushing yards (1,845), and rushing touchdowns (13) while helping the Cowboys reach the divisional round of the playoffs.

Strangely, the Tennessee Titans coaching staff stubbornly stuck with DeMarco Murray as the lead of their tailback committee last season, even though Murray was in the middle of an terrible season. He caught 39 passes for 266 yards and a score.

Murray remains confident he can start in the NFL.

One other concern about Murray is the fact that he will be 30 years old when the regular season begins, and running backs tend to have precipitous falls. The former Alabama star showcased his talent for Tennessee with his 156-yard rushing performance in the team's playoff win at Kansas City. However, that would be his a year ago with the Cowboys, moving onto the Philadelphia Eagles for one season before being dealt to the Titans. With the miles on him, he might have to wait until after the draft to land with a team. The San Francisco 49ers announced Thursday they had reached agreement on a three-year extension with the former Olympic prospect worth $20.3 million with $10 million in guaranteed cash.

If the price is right, the Giants could do far worse than signing Murray to a short-term deal, which would also make the position far less of a priority both during the NFL Draft and when the spending spree of free agency begins next week.

The Washington Redskins could consider signing him.
