The accessory will be Apple-branded and focus on audio quality. If differentiated enough, the headphones could even stand alongside Apple's Beats lineup, much as the company's current AirPods and BeatsX wireless headphones share space on Apple store shelves. Logically speaking, the headphones are expected to feature some new technology.
Apple is planning to release a pair of over-the-ear headphones sometime this year, according to an investors note written by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and seen by AppleInsider. The analyst doesn't give a specific time frame prediction but does say that he doesn't believe the headphones will launch before the fourth quarter of 2018. They could launch as soon as this year. Unlike earbuds, the new set of headphones would have Apple branding. These earbuds brought along a number of useful features like pausing music when one earbud is out, contacting Siri with a double-tap, and obviously more freedom since they're completely wireless. The users will now be able to activate the little helper simply by saying the phrase "Hey Siri". It's possible that the company could just borrow whatever its using in the latest version of its AirPod, or it could go design a brand-new chip that enables extra functionality for its Apple headphones-which could include features like noise cancellation, increased battery life, quick charging, or adjustable noise cancellation levels, to name a few. My money is on Apple charging $349 because that seems to be a sweet spot for the company.
Bloomberg also said the subsequent model, which could be released next year, is purportedly water resistant.
