North Carolina made play after play in the heart of the second half, pulling out in front by 15 points with 6:36 to play. But then Roy Williams benched all five of his starters and the wake-up call worked, as the Heels outscored Miami, 82-51, over the next 33 minutes.
Pinson was joking, but as with all good comedy there was some truth in the punchline.
That put the Tar Heels up 10 on the Hurricanes with 2 minutes left, all but wrapping up a second straight Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament semifinals meeting between North Carolina and Duke in Brooklyn.
Virginia's defence has been as good as advertised, but to be honest, I never really read into UNC as a #6 seed as I knew the Tar Heels were better than their position and I personally wasn't overly anxious about North Carolina.
"Coach said yesterday in practice we're such an unselfish team he doesn't really have to worry about us moving the ball", Pinson said.
"I think toward the end, we were just trying not to make mistakes and we ended up making mistakes instead of just continuing to be aggressive", North Carolina senior Joel Berry II said. Marvin Bagley III was the game's high scorer with 33 points on 15-for-23 shooting. The Orange will head toward NCAA Tournament Selection Sunday firmly on the bubble for an at-large bid. "(If) Mike has that team together the whole year, forget it; they could be - I'm telling you, if they get in, they'll - they're going to beat people". "It'll be close. There's a whole group of teams that - some that's nearly a coin flip".
Friday night against Duke, five Tar Heels players scored at least 10 points in the 74-69 win. They've also beaten Ohio State, Clemson and Arkansas, so there is no shortage of great resume wins for the Tar Heels, who could secure a top seed with a win over the Wahoos on Saturday.
The case against North Carolina is pretty simple too.
"Last year we had guys who could score the ball and he was more of a facilitator", said Berry, who bounced back from an ankle injury to score 11 points, despite his shooting woes. North Carolina led by as much as 13 points, before Bagley got going and scored eight points in the last 10 minutes.
The lead was up to 21 when Williams slipped a pass to Cameron Johnson trailing on the break for a layup. Guy leads Virginia in scoring with 14.1 points per game while Jerome leads the Cavaliers in assists with 3.9 assists per game and Isaiah Wilkins leads the Cavaliers on the glass with 6.3 rebounds per game this season. They eliminated Syracuse and knocked off Miami.
North Carolina is clicking on all cylinders right now. And they finished 9-11 against ACC competition.
With the win, Berry has now played in 60 ACC wins during his time at North Carolina which is the most-ever by a Tar Heel in their career. The Blue Devils won the last two, beating North Carolina in the tournament final in 2011 then again in the semifinals past year. Notre Dame suffered a seven-game losing streak in the middle of the season, won just eight regular season games in the ACC and lost to the likes of Ball State and in while at full strength.
North Carolina played a day before Duke because of missing out on a double-bye.
