The whole thing has been very painful for me.
Disgraced former "Today" show host Matt Lauer's longtime colleague Katie Couric has broken her silence about Lauer's firing in late November from NBC for "inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace". "It's incredibly upsetting and I will say something when I'm ready to", she wrote, adding, "Thanks for your interest". Matt was a kind, generous colleague who treated me with a lot of respect'. I feel I speak for many of my coworkers once I say it was not exactly the Matt we knew. She added that "It's still very upsetting", and that she "really admire [s] the way Savannah [Guthrie] and Hoda [Kotb] and the entire Today show staff have handled a very hard situation". "The accounts I have read and heard are upsetting, debilitating and disorienting plus it's really completely improper that any female in the Now show experienced this sort of treatment method".
The former Today co-host has released a statement about Matt's dismissal from the show for allegations of sexual misconduct. Kotb, who had been on the show since 2008, received encouragement from all her fellow anchors and even Lauer himself.
Katie Couric has more to say about Matt Lauer's firing.
'I had no idea this was going on during my tenure or after I left. "To the people I have hurt, I'm truly sorry".
Though Couric made a lighthearted comment in 2012 on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen claiming that Lauer "pinches me on the a** a lot", she clarified to People magazine that she wasn't serious. I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly.
Couric addressed the confusion, explaining that what she had previously said was nothing but a joke! I really admire the way Savannah [Guthrie] and Hoda [Kotb] and the entire Today show staff have handled a very hard situation. It is now my full-time job The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws.
She also maintains that she was completely unaware of any incidents taking place during her time on the show, from 1991 to 2006.
