International Olympic Committee extends North Korea deadline for Pyeongchang Games

Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump have exchanged fiery barbs in the past year and Trump has warned that the United States would have no choice but to "totally destroy" North Korea if forced to defend itself or its allies.

"We welcome the discussion which will take place on Wednesday between the governments of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)", an International Olympic Committee spokesman said.

Nikki Haley made clear that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would first need to stop weapons testing for a "significant amount of time".

North and South Korea also agreed to hold the first high level talks since 2015 to discuss "matters of mutual interest", including North Korea's participation in the Winter Olympics. South Korea may suggest that North and South Korean athletes parade together during the opening and closing ceremonies and field a joint women's ice hockey team.

But North Korea, which is weak in winter sports, now has no athletes qualified to participate in the Pyeonghang Games.

According to reports, Bach is scheduled to meet Chang Ung, a member of the North Korean Olympic body at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne to discuss North Korea's possible participation in the games.

They also discussed ways to bring North Korea to the dialogue table for meaningful talks.
