DeWanda Wise joins Brie Larson in 'Captain Marvel'

With Captain Marvel also marking the first MCU movie directed by a female, the cast so far had yet to add any other female roles.

DeWanda Wise is about to have it all. If so, this would increase the importance of Wise's character exponentially, leading to (my) speculation that she could only be playing a well-known comic book character. The story of Captain Marvel focuses on Marvel character Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident.

Captain Marvel will also star Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as Nick Fury, and is said to take place in the 1990s, with a Skrull-based threat as the villain. A police lieutenant from New Orleans, she possesses the ability to transform herself into any form of energy.

Her specific role isn't specified, but that didn't stop the interwebs from buzzing that Wise could be taking on the part of fellow Marvel superhero Monica Rambeau aka Captain Marvel aka Spectrum. In the comics, Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau share a love/love/hate relationship but hold a substantial amount of mutual respect for one another. Rambeau was a cop who was exposed to extra-dimensional energy, which gave her the ability to manipulate her body into any kind of energy. Captain Marvel is set to have a short period of filming later this month before production kicks into full gear later this spring, so Marvel has been busy rounding out the cast. Ryan Coogler's Black Panther is arguably one of the most anticipated Marvel movies since Avengers. Just excited to see DeWanda getting more big roles?
