- The San Marcos Police Department are reporting that a police officer has been shot and killed.

A San Marcos, Texas, police officer attempted to serve a warrant on a suspect in the El Camino Real subdivision. The officer was wearing his protective vest and was transported to Central Texas Medical Center immediately.

The suspect, who surrendered to police following a standoff with the San Marcos/Hays County SWAT team, was found to have been shot and taken to South Austin Medical Center where he's being guarded. Copeland leaves behind a wife and four children. It's also unclear if the suspect who shot Copeland was also the subject of the arrest warrant. He worked just about every day off to provide for his kids and because he knows we're shorthanded and we need the help.

"His picture's hanging in different parts of this Police Department because everybody loved him". As the mayor noted we have to band together.

San Marcos Mayor John Thomaides called Copeland a "member of our family" and asked for the city to rally around men and women in law enforcement.

Block said the neighbors, for the most part, got along and this would be a hard blow for the residents to move past.

"As the San Marcos community and Police Department continue to mourn the tragic death of officer Kenneth Copeland, I've ordered Texas flags to be lowered in remembrance of his courage and bravery", said Abbott.

This is a developing story and will be updated with further information as it becomes available.
