Kohli rested for Sri Lanka T20s, Bumrah in line for Test debut

The first Test will start on January 5 in Cape Town, the second Test will be played in Centurion on January 13, and the final Test match of the series will be played in Johannesburg on January 24. The Test squad has three openers in Lokesh Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay followed by Cheteshwar Pujara, Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit.

The other four pacemen - Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav - were automatic picks. Hardik Pandya returned to the Test squad after being rested for the Sri Lanka Test series.

The 23-year-old Bumrah, who has 52 and 40 wickets respectively from 28 ODIs and 3O T20Is, has not played any first-class cricket this season.

The chairman of selectors also said he was feeling unfortunate to sideline the chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav for the Test series. It was a unanimous choice and we had no doubts about that.

India captain Virat Kohli, who has been playing non-stop cricket since IPL, will be given a month's break to recharge his batteries before the all-important South Africa tour.

"Otherwise, Kuldeep is definitely a top-class bowler and over a period of time we'll see him growing".

Parthiv Patel will also travel to South Africa as a backup wicket-keeper to Wridhhiman Saha.

The squad features three uncapped players in Washington Sundar, Deepak Hooda and Basil Thampi.
