Apple release the top 20 downloaded apps of 2017


Apple has announced its Best of 2017 apps and games, this year utilizing the Today cards in the iOS 11 App Store to feature the winners. The Witness is a puzzle game available at $9.99 for both the iPad and iPhone.

In addition to the curated lists from its editors, Apple also shared the lists of the most downloaded apps and content of the year.

Super Mario Run tops the most downloaded games chart, followed by 8 Ball Pool, Snake VS Block, Ballz, Word Cookies and Subway Surfers. While you're at it, we also have our lists of the best iPhone apps and the best iPhone games as well. See the full charts in the App Store.

The company's iPad app of the year is Affinity Photo, a professional-level photo editing suite that can handle uncompressed RAW files and allows you to create an unlimited number of layers.

The top free iPhone apps of the year included lots of usual suspects: Bitmoji, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Facebook, Google Maps, Netflix, Spotify, and Uber.

This year, Apple has also introduced a new year-end section for the "trends of the year".

The top 4 trends of the year according to Apple were AR, multiplayer games, mental and reading apps. This includes different categories such as casual games, general apps, augmented reality and more.

Moana was the top movie of the year, followed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Wonder Woman, Apple said.

In music, two names reign supreme with Drake's More Life and Ed Sheeran's Shape of You taking the awards for top album and top song, respectively. Taylor Swift's album "reputation" has already shot up to #3 on the 2017 USA top album charts, despite having only been available for a short period of time. Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, The Big Bang Theory and Rick and Morty topped the iTunes TV charts this year. You can see the full U.S. list here.
