Two people were injured, and shoppers were evacuated from a bustling mall in Orange County, New York Sunday afternoon, after sources said a customer's firearm accidentally discharged.
Wallkill Police Department Chief Robert Hertman said the gun discharged shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Galleria at Crystal Run in Middletown, about 70 miles north of Manhattan. The extent of their injuries was not immediately learned. Two people were injured but it's unclear if they were shot.
"It appears that a male wearing a dark-hooded sweatshirt and gray trousers discharged one round from a handgun into the floor of the second-level mall in front of the American Eagle store", says Walkill Police Chief Robert Hertman. CBS New York reports that the entire mall was closed and on lockdown by 5 p.m.
According to Hertman and Nevel, it is legal for a person with a permit to bring a registered gun into the mall.
