Several people feared dead after tourist ferry capsizes in Andhra


Andhra Pradesh DGP Sambha Shiva Rao confirmed recovery of 16 bodies so far in the tragic incident.

The incident occurred while the ferry was going from Bhavani Island to the Pavithra Sangamam, on the Krishna River in Ibrahimpatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Officials said 41 passengers, including 31 members of Ongole Wakers Club, were present in the boat when it overturned.

Gowtham Sawang, the police commissioner of Vijayawada, and other officials rushed to the spot and supervised the rescue operation using high-power flashlights.

China Rajappa, who was supervising rescue operations at the accident spot, announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased. As many as 15 people were either rescued by local fishermen or swam to safety.

National Disaster Response Force personnel are now performing rescue operation. They had travelled to Bhavani Island by an AP Tourism Development Corporation boat. "As it was nearing the ferry point, it came to a sudden halt as a result of which passengers fell towards one side of the boat and it overturned within seconds", a survivor told the local media persons.

Tourism Minister Akhila Priya ordered probe into the incident.
