Russian Fighter Intercepts US Reconaissance Aircraft over Black Sea

"The U.S. aircraft was operating in global airspace and did nothing to provoke this Russian behavior", Lt. Col. Michelle Baldanza, a spokeswoman for the Pentagon, told reporters.

The maneuver left "violent turbulence" in its wake, forcing the P-8A to deal with a 15-degree roll, according to Baldanza. It is reported that the incident lasted for around 24 minutes.

A spokesperson for the Pentagon tells CNN that a Russian fighter jet made an "unsafe", unprovoked intercept of a us aircraft in global waters on Saturday, Nov. 25.

A Russian Su-30 Fighter Jet buzzed a reconnaissance US navy aircraft, which was flying over the Black Sea, during the conduction of routine petrol at global airspace on Saturday.

"The P-8 was forced to fly through the jet wash of the SU-30", Baldanza said.

The Black Sea is also a notable location given Vladimir Putin considers it an area of vital strategic importance. This forced the US aircraft to undergo a 15-degree roll and experience aggressive turbulence.

U.S. Navy flight pilots are seen aboard the Boeing P-8A Poseidon plane before its departure to take part in the search for the ARA San Juan submarine missing at sea, at a military air base in Bahia Blanca, Argentina, November 26. The Navy aircraft had its transponder on and was conducting "routine operations in global airspace". "A Sukhoi-30 jet of the Southern Military District's air defense was ordered into the air for interception", a statement published by the Russian government owned media outlet TASS said.

US and Russian aircraft often have encounters in the region, some of which the United States has slammed as unsafe and/or unprofessional.
