Rance Howard, actor dad of director Ron Howard, dies at 89


The actor, who appeared in films such as Apollo 13, was described as a man with "great personal integrity" in a tribute.

He moved to NY and was cast with son Ron Howard in "The Journey", the TCM archives said.

Actor Rance Howard, father of director Ron Howard and Clint Howard, died on Saturday. He is survived by his sons as well as his grandchildren Bryce Dallas, Paige, Joceyln, and Reed Cross. He stood especially tall [for] his ability to balance ambition [with] great personal integrity.

Rance Howard was also seen in the movie called Broken Memories, which follows a story about a son struggling with his father's Alzheimer's.

Adding: 'A depression-era farm boy, his passion for acting changed the course of our family history. "We love & miss U Dad", Ron tweeted.

Rance would go on to work with his sons many times over the years in movies like Grand Theft Auto, Gung Ho, and Apollo 13, where he played a minister.

Russell Crowe, who had the lead role in "A Beautiful Mind", tweeted: "Hey @RealRonHoward my deepest condolences".

"I've played doctors, judges, sheriffs - as a character actor, I've run the gamut", Rance Howard told the Oklahoman.

"He's had a 65-year career where he has never broken out as a movie star", Bryce said via THR.

He also starred in Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" in 2013. On television, he appeared in many series including Seinfeld, Murder She Wrote, NCIS: Los Angeles, Grey's Anatomy, and Happy Days. They met as teenagers doing a touring children's production in Oklahoma of classic fairy tales like "Snow White" and "Cinderella".

"A Beautiful Mind", directed by Ron Howard, won the award in 2001.
