We're met with of Rey looking satisfied with her Jedi training, we see Poe test out a new feature of his X-wing that throws himself and BB-8 for a loop, and we get to hear Finn deliver the most famous Star Wars line outside of "I have a bad feeling about this" - all set to the John Williams score of the original movie. "Rian will do incredible things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy".
Johnson will re-team with Ram Bergman, his longtime producer who helped him on previous films such as Brick and Looper.
Disney did not provide release dates for the films or any further details regarding their plots or titles.
Johnson's new trilogy will expand the Star Wars universe further and will include new characters.
"We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi", Johnson and Bergman said in a statement via Deadline.
Rian Johnson, the director of "The Last Jedi", will sit at the helm of the first film as writer and director. "'Star Wars" is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. Abrams on Episode IX and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were unexpectedly fired from the Han Solo spinoff two weeks before shooting was set to finish.
The Last Jedi, which follows on from 2015's hit film The Force Awakens and is expected to focus on Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), will be in theatres on December 15.
Additionally, the sci-fi franchise will also its own live-action series, which will premiere on Disney's new streaming service, which launches in 2019.
On the TV side, Iger announced in September that two of Disney's biggest cinematic franchises, "Star Wars" and Marvel, would migrate to Disney's entertainment streaming service, which is being positioned to compete with such services as Netflix.
