The first female Doctor Who in the long-running British sci-fi series will get a brand-new look.
America has just released the first official photo of Jodie Whittaker in costume as the 13th Doctor from the science-fiction television series Doctor Who. Finally, the stipes on her shirt are also an echo of Doctors past, with the pattern and colors used calling back to Tom Baker's iconic striped scarf.
Doctor Who fans rejoice.
It may seem a little silly to obsess over what an essentially immortal alien who carries around a plot device machine in their pockets chooses to wear, but the costume has always been an important part of The Doctor's identity.
The BBC have shared this scintillating shot of the Thirteenth Doctor across their social media, depicting her atop some pretty idyllic clifftops.
When her casting was announced in July, Whittaker said it felt "overwhelming, as a feminist" to have the role. Whittaker's costume is a colorful, unique outfit with suspenders, rolled up pants, boots and a large open coat. So when Jodie Whittaker makes her debut as the Thirteenth Doctor next month, she'll literally be wearing Peter Capaldi's pants.
What do you think of the new look?
Whilst both Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi and Tenth Doctor David Tennant were both fans of a trench coat.
Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill will also appear in the new series, which will air in 2018.
Casting a female in the role kicked up some controversy with the Whovain fan-base, but as with each new incarnation of the Doctor, we need to give her (and the new show-runner) a chance to show us how awesome they can make Doctor Who be! And yet, this is an outfit that, while new, instantly screams "The Doctor", and it's one that you might just see a whole lot more of come the next comic-con season.
