According to a Monday afternoon report from Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Grizzlies have elected to fire head coach David Fizdale. After leading the Grizzlies to the playoffs last season, Fizdale will end his coaching term with Memphis with a 50-51 record.
With the Grizzlies on an eight-game losing streak and concerns over the coach's relationship with All-Star centre Marc Gasol, the team made the move on Monday afternoon U.S. time.
"If I'm not on the floor, then I'm not valued", Gasol said.
"It's a first for me, trust me, and I don't like it one bit", Gasol, who leads Memphis in points, rebounds and assists, said. "I'm more (angry) than I can show, and frustrated".
Taking it a step further, the relationship between Fizdale and Gasol was already on the rocks, reportedly.
Fizdale should do everything in his power to keep Gasol satisfied, though. Clearly ownership or management felt there was a need for change.
Odds are that there are deeper issues going on here, especially as the team continues to struggle without Conley.
Fizdale, a widely respected coach around the league, was in just his second season on the job. If that were the case, the team could've kept Fizdale and thens hope Gasol.
Fizdale was criticised for benching center Marc Gasol for the final 15:05, including the entire fourth quarter in that loss and will be replaced by associate head coach JB Bickerstaff in the interim. Hollins was the Grizzlies' last interim coach.
