The incident happened at Adambakkam AGS Colony, in Saraswathi Nagar, between 8.45 pm and 9 pm on Monday night. He claimed to be in love with Indhuja but she turned down his advances, which angered him and he killed her.

According to The Times of India, Induja died after being admitted to the hospital.

The victim was an engineer by profession and the accused was a classmate in school. When she opened the door and stepped out, Akash splashed petrol at her and set her on fire.

As per The News Minute, Aakash, who lives in the neighbourhood, landed up outside Indhuja's residence on Monday night. The victim's mother is said to have suffered 49 per cent burns and her is said to be in the ICU. This is when, the police say, the accused threw petrol on the victim and used a lighter to set her on fire.

NDTV quoted the police as saying that even though Induja's family had rebuffed him, he said they were in a relationship and had plans of getting married. "Knowing that my brother is working overseas, the accused came to Induja's residence".

On hearing their screams, the neighbours rushed to the victim's house. Initially, they didn't open the door, but Akash insisted that he would only to talk to Induja.
