Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, was crowned Miss Universe 2017 at a glittering ceremony in Las Vegas on Monday morning (IST).

The 2017 Miss Universe pageant will air on Fox at 7 p.m. ET, live from The Axis at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.

Demi recently earned her degree in Business Management from North West University. Falling just short in the finale, the first and second runner-ups were Miss Colombia, Laura González, and Miss Jamaica, Davina Bennett*, respectively.

Ninety-two women from around the world participated in the decades-old competition.

This year, Cambodia, Laos and Nepaul competed at the Miss Universe finals for the first time ever. Demi has taken home a very handsome salary, a luxury apartment in NY and many more goodies.

Last year, Iris Mittenaere from France was crowned when the pageant took place in the Philippines. "I believe in equal pay for equal work", replied the 22-year-old.

"You feel so empowered because you are on a stage with 91 other women that are strong, that are independent, that have worked really hard", she said.

The beauty queen was a firm favourite throughout the competition but it was the question and answer section that sealed the deal.
