Trump Calls Clinton, DNC's Funding Of Dossier A 'Sad Commentary' On Politics

In April 2016, lawyer Marc Elias, working on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the DNC, retained Washington firm Fusion GPS to examine Mr Trump's Russian Federation links, according to the report. The payments continued until just days before the November 2016 election.

The president tweeted about the dossier Wednesday morning, hours after it was reported that the Clinton camp helped bankroll research that led to the "golden showers" dossier on Trump. "Clinton campaign paid for the fake Russian Federation dossier, then lied about it & covered it up", Sanders tweeted.

In a letter, Elias' law firm, Perkins Coie, said it began working with Fusion GPS in April 2016 and that the Clinton campaign and the DNC stopped funding Fusion GPS' research before the presidential election November 8.

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that the Clinton campaign and the DNC funded the dossier. It will be determined", Trump said of the Republican originator of the research funding, adding: "It might have starred with the Republicans early on in the primaries.

What is the Trump dossier?

Some of the pushback on the left has focused on the fact that a still-unidentified Republican client retained Fusion GPS to do research on Trump before the Clinton campaign and the DNC.

"'Clinton campaign & DNC paid for research that led to the anti-Trump Fake News Dossier". The man leading the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election, Robert Mueller, would also appear to be taking the dossier's findings seriously.

The Kremlin campaign included hacking the DNC's computer systems, releasing pilfered communications to WikiLeaks to publish them, and a sophisticated overt propaganda and disinformation campaign.

Trump has also attacked the findings of the FBI, NSA and Central Intelligence Agency that Russian Federation waged a large-scale influence campaign to interfere in the election. "While he was certainly familiar with some, but not all, of the information in it, from the research that was being done, he didn't have and hadn't seen the full document, nor was he involved in pitching it to reporters".

"It is relevant who paid for the dossier".

Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, which is probing Russia's election role, have done so as well.

Last week, an attorney for Fusion GPS sent a letter to the House Intelligence Committee that suggested it has no plans to cooperate with its investigation. The California Republican delegated authority on the Russian Federation matter to Republican Rep. Mike Conaway of Texas.

Earlier Tuesday, Fusion GPS lawyer William Taylor issued a statement that Congress' request was overly broad and that it was "designed to punish President Trump's political foes while chilling future investigative research into his actions".

Fusion GPS and the bank must let the court know by 3 p.m. Thursday if the parties reach a settlement.

The briefing, which was classified, was presented by four senior US intelligence chiefs, including then-FBI Director James Comey. And you know, people shouldn't lose sight of the fact that as far back as February of this year, Don, CNN reported and others have subsequently reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bob Mueller's team have corroborated many key aspects of the dossier.
