Four years after conviction, Talwars set free in Aarushi murder case

Aarushi Talwar murder case verdict: Nupur and Rajesh Talwar acquitted by Allahabad HC.

Sentenced to life imprisonment by the Ghaziabad CBI Court on November 26 2013, the appeal against this sentence was upheld by a division of the court comprising Justices BK Narayana and AK Mishra. She (Nupur Talwar) said they got justice today and had tears of joy. The needle of suspicion had initially moved towards 45-year-old Hemraj, who had gone missing but his body was recovered from the terrace of the house two days later.

Aarushi's parents are likely to be released on Friday.

The case has been under investigation for 9 years now.

Pronouncing the verdict in a packed courtroom, the bench said that it is a fit case where the benefit of the doubt can be given to the appellants and set aside the judgement of the CBI court convicting the Talwars.

# I was in pain to see my daughter and son-in-law for the crime that they have not committed: Nupur Talwar's father.

However, the court rejected the CBI's claim of lack of evidence.

# We are waiting for the copy of the judgement. The chain of evidence they have showcased is inconclusive. "We are really grateful to the High Court for having aquitted and ending the injustice meted out to them". "I don't think it would be possible to go back to a routine life", Ms Talwar told Vartika Nanda, a former journalist who made the switch to academics and has been working on reforms in prisons too.

# Will approach the Supreme Court if HC rules against us, says Talwars' lawyer.

India has been riveted by the case since the first details of the double murder in the affluent New Delhi suburb of Noida emerged.

Filmmakers Vishal Bhardwaj and Meghna Gulzar, in their critically acclaimed movie "Talvar" on the murder case, presented alternative narratives of what could have happened on the night of May 16, 2008, when Aarushi was found dead with her throat slit in her 0home in an upper middleclass neighbourhood in the New Delhi suburb of Noida. It, however, added that there was insufficient evidence against them.
