Intriguing images to be sure.
While last season left Mulder succumbing to the Spartan Virus, the trailer sees him looking a dapper as ever - with Scully looking worse for wear. When asked why she returning at all, she replied: "It felt like it wasn't over, didn't feel we necessarily delivered everything the fans were expecting of us last time".
Whatever the case, it seems like William will be a central figure in the whole alien-colonization conspiracy and will play a major role in what looks to be a mythology-focused season. At the time, the survival of Fox Mulder and the fate of humanity hinged upon Dana Scully finding their son, William.
Those working on X-Files have in the past tried to do a show without Duchovny and Anderson, but it's something that fell flat with viewers, so we can't see them trying something similar again. There's all kinds of creepy stuff here, from people running through cemeteries, to somebody who is being experimented on, shootouts, the military, a reference to Mulder and Scully's son William, and new cast member Barbara Hershey looking positively diabolical.
The clip features quick glimpses of auto chases, graveyards, monsters and aliens before Anderson's Dana Scully warns Duchovny's Fox Mulder from her hospital bed, "You have to find him and you have to stop him before he releases hell on Earth". "Reparlez me in several years, when I have closed the door", she added. And maybe if this were any other show, it would be a little weird for Carter to reveal a confirmed cliffhanger at the end of the series, but that's common X-Files territory.
The X-Files season 11 is expected to premiere in early 2018. "I think this will be it for me".
"Obviously something unexpected has happened", Carter says cryptically in the first look of the season from Entertainment Weekly.
