Everton match turns to chaos as fan punches player

Everton are facing punishment from UEFA after being charged over an ugly brawl in their Europa League clash with Lyon which fans became involved in.

Everton captain on the night Ashley Williams pushed Anthony Lopes, the Lyon goalkeeper, sparking an terrible lot of pushing and shoving between the two teams. Before his header though, Williams inspired a brawl behind the Lyon goal.

One fan, who was holding a baby during the incident, was filmed lunging at Lyon's players from the stands. A video of it and the aftermath can be seen on BT Sport Football's Twitter account. It is what it is. But I am proud that we were strong at 1-1 we won the game despite everything.

UEFA are also likely to take action against Everton, but are now waiting on the referee's match report to be submitted before deciding on an angle of attack. "That was just one of those times". "It is what it is", said Williams after the game.

"The fact that a couple of Everton backroom staff had to enter the field to calm Williams down showed how out of control the captain was and, while their intervention helped, they should not enter the field of play. Unless the referee ill-advisedly says he saw everything, sanctions really must follow".

Everton were hoping to get their Europa League campaign going against Lyon tonight.

"I don't think it is part of the English atmosphere to hit an away player, but it was like this".

"The referee was Dutch but he didn't do anything against the theatre of some of the Lyon players".

However, they got off to the worst possible start after just six minutes when Mason Holgate conceded a penalty, and Nabil Fekir tucked away the resulting spot-kick.

"I understand with my players, that comes out of frustration".

Everton have now taken just one point from their three Group H games, having lost 3-0 to Atalanta and drawn 2-2 with Apollon Limassol.
