Kenya has dominated Chicago's marathon, winning 13 of the last 14 races. He also won at Chicago and Tokyo in 2013, capturing the U.S. race in 2:03:45. This is now the first time Americans have finished top three in both the men's and women's races at the Chicago Marathon since 1985.

It made Rupp the first home victor since Moroccan-born Khalid Khannouchi in 2002 and the first American-born champion since Greg Meyer in 1982. I made the mistake in the past of going out a little too hard too soon and you still have a long ways to go for several miles. "I want to use my 10k foot speed and make history".

This was followed by second place at the Boston Marathon before victory today.

Ethiopia's Zersenay Tadese, 35, was eighth in the 10,000m in Rio and is hoping to complete a marathon for the fourth time in his career.

World record holder Dennis Kimetto was also in the race but dropped out due injury.

Dibaba led after 5km in 16:08, 19 seconds under Radcliffe's course record pace, and had trimmed the field in the lead pack to only five.

Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba pushed toward a course-record pace nearly from the start to win the women's side of the Marathon in 2:18:31.

As he came down the home straight Rupp looked strong and composed to clinch the win in 2:09:20, taking over 38 seconds off his personal best. She went out with an aggressive pace and was all alone by the 30-kilometer mark. She broke 1984 Olympic medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson's Chicago course record for an American. American Jordan Hasay set a PB finishing third overall, matching her placing-performance from Boston, running 2:20:57.

The World Marathon Majors continue on November 5 with the New York City Marathon.
