As the Hendrick Motorsports driver prepares to climb into the race vehicle for the final time at each track - or at least likely for the last time, as he has left the door open for possible one-off races - we take a look at how he has fared over the years at each venue and what to expect in his last ride there.
"Obviously this is one of the toughest spots we have been in as a team". But keep an eye on rookie Erik Jones, who enters Richmond riding a streak of five consecutive top-10 finishes and almost won August 19 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
"The Allegiant team worked hard today to get us a good Camaro for tonight's race".
In 2016, the first year of the Xfinity Series playoffs, Sadler led the standings for 14 weeks leading into the season finale at Homestead Miami Speedway. I have seen this situation in the past and teams that I've even been in fall apart and it just goes worse and spirals out of control. We just have to get faster.
For Joey Logano, this is it.
"We all know someone who has been impacted by natural disasters, so it is our duty to rally support from our NASCAR community to help the American Red Cross's efforts", said Richmond President Dennis Bickmeier. "We'll just go there and do the best we can and put all the cards on the table over there". It's that simple as he needs that victory to first get into the playoffs and have a shot at the championship.
After Kenseth, the balance of the top-12 qualifiers were: Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch, Kyle Larson, Truex, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Chase Elliott, Jones, Jamie McMurray, and Joey Logan. Jones has had an incredibly quiet and consistent season for a rookie.
Chase Elliott, Matt Kenseth and Jamie McMurray now hold the last three playoff spots and can not be passed in the points standings.
"Well, you are never comfortable", Elliott said. We can win from the fifth starting spot and I feel good about tomorrow night. I wouldn't say we are at that spot.
Sadler has yet to win a race in 2017. So, it's tight for sure where we are at. This includes the Daytona 500, where no engine swaps will be allowed between its qualifying race and the main event. We can run a really good auto and then have time to prepare it and then run it again.
"We tried some things in the second practice that won't get us front-end speed, but we did some things that I think will help our vehicle on the long run". After about 30 laps, we were behind the Penske guys on speed and we were behind all the Toyotas on speed by a tenth (of a second) or two.
The feeling of desperation is shared by so many other drivers.
