Video shows auto plunge 7 stories from Austin parking garage onto SUV

Authorities have released video showing the moment a BMW 4 Series plunged seven stories off the edge of a parking garage in downtown Austin, Texas earlier this summer, narrowly missing a man driving his SUV as it smashed into the alley below.

The auto rebounds onto William Burch's Tahoe and then turns over on its top.

A video of the incident, which occurred on July 13, was released on Friday by Austin police and shows just how close Burch came to being squashed.

The impact of the crash sent the BMW bouncing off the back of the Tahoe before it comes to a rest on its roof. Police said they mistook the gas pedal for the brakes and crashed through the parking garage barriers. After the crash, he told local TV station KVUE, he was turning around with his window down when he heard something "I was talking to my mom on speaker on my phone, and I heard all these loud noises and bangs...."

His SUV was caught by barrier wires, leaving the vehicle hanging off the side of the garage. "So I just immediately just put it in drive and started driving forward and as I started driving forward, the vehicle landed on me". The SUV moves out of the way before bystanders rush to help the driver of the BMW.

Littlefield was cited for unsafe conditions for its barrier cable systems in that incident.
