Tax Free Weekend for Back to School Shoppers

Many states hold their tax holidays in August to coincide with back-to-school shopping.

Only nine states are participating in the tax free holiday this weekend, Friday, August 4 through Sunday, August 6.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reminds shoppers they can save money on certain items during the state's annual sales tax holiday. School supplies like pens, pencils, erasers, rulers and glue costing no more than $15 per item. The tax exemption also applies to school instructional materials priced at $20 per item or less.

However, if an item is out of stock and a retailer provides a raincheck, the purchase is not tax exempt if it made after the sales tax holiday.

And that's a welcome relief given how high back-to-school spending gets.

"I know there are reports out there saying these sales-tax holidays aren't that good for retailers", Miller said. Clothing must be $60 or less per item, and computers must be $750 or less per unit.

With metro-area schools starting up in the next few weeks, the weekend presents an opportunity to save the 7 percent sales tax charged in Council Bluffs.

In years past, shoppers have saved between $2 million and $3 million dollars in taxes, according to a release from the state's revenue department.

The Eastwood Mall Complex in Niles is celebrating the tax-free holiday with a family friendly event.

You don't have to shop in-store to take advantage of tax-free weekend.

The sales tax holiday does not apply to vehicle purchases, restaurant orders, hotel occupancy, leases or rentals of tangiple personal property, fix work, or admission to athletic, entertainment or recreational functions.

School supply lists can be found on the homepages of the division's elementary and middle schools.

Q. Does Nebraska have a tax holiday? "We have back to school kids boots, but there are a lot of things here for the adults too".
