Giants' WR Beckham suffers ankle sprain in preseason game

Initial X-rays on both players were negative. But simultaneously with securing the pass, Beckham was submarined by cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun, who hit him on the left knee.

Beckham left in the second quarter and was seen on camera writhing in pain outside the New York Giants' locker room.

The Giants said the 24-year-old suffered only an ankle sprain but would be evaluated further.

The ESPN broadcast provided updates not long after the injury that suggest good news. "It's just football in my opinion".

Jarvis Landry, Dolphins wide receiver and Beckham's college teammate, made his feelings about the preseason clear.

All conversations about the NY offense drastically change, obviously, if Beckham misses action once Week 1 rolls around.

The exact severity of the injury remains unclear, as does the Giants' willingness to expose him to more preseason action should his health allow. He will undergo further testing upon his return to NY. Beckham is already one of the biggest stars in the National Football League and he's significantly younger, so you can expect that he'll be looking for at least as much money. Big-name veterans generally participate in few of the contests, and those that do play limited snaps. Those are the guys that are going to compete like it's the regular season or even the postseason.

"It was pretty scary", Beckham said.

Considering the way the hit looked in real time, Giants fans should breath a sigh of relief that Odell only sprained his ankle.

Still, the preseason does little for vets like Beckham.

In the Browns' two preseason games, the second-year defensive back has come up biggest when he and the rest of the defense had its backs against the wall on the goal line. The issue is that it doesn't provide equal opportunity to everybody. Teams still feel external pressure to showcase their star players in at least some of these games.
