Yuki Bhambri beat Guido Pella 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1 in the third round of the Citi Open ATP 500 tennis tournament here.

The clock had nearly struck midnight when the 15th seed finally closed out the third-round match with his 21st ace to seal a 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 ( 9-7) victory in a little under three hours.

The 20-year-old did not face a break point against the Japanese star, converting two of his own after a little more than an hour on court.

Nishikori, the 2015 Washington victor, beat three-time champion Juan Martin Del Potro 6-4, 7-5, for only his second victory in seven matches against the Argentine 13th seed.

Paul, who has never faced Nishikori, has ousted seventh seed Lucas Pouille and 11th seed Gilles Muller.

Stunned is a strong word, as Anderson is now 6-0 in career head-to-head matches against Thiem. "If I would have served better I could have saved it in the third set". Notably, the latter entered the quarter-final after saving a match point to beat world number nine Dominic Thiem on Friday. Although no one was broken in the second set, Thiem managed to break Anderson twice to make the score 4-3 in his favor.

The third set tiebreaker is where things really became tense.

"Hopefully I can win a few more matches here", Bhambri said.

Anderson didn't want to waste a challenge over the call though and Thiem would concede the point. He comes in and attacks. "If I'm taking care of business on my side of the ball, then I give myself the best chance".

In the women's doubles event, top-seeded Sania Mirza and Romanian partner Monica Niculescu lost to USA's Eugenie Bouchard and Canada's Sloane Stephens 6-1, 5-7, 8-10 in the semi-final.
