BMW M5 Unveiled With 600 PS, AWD and RWD

The new generation high-performance sedan is the pinnacle of BMW M, naturally, even though it retains the serious look of its predecessors, making a stance without throwing common sense over board. For example, newly developed turbochargers, ultra-efficient indirect charge air cooling and increased fuel injection pressure together help to raise output and, above all, torque.

The new BMW M5 is expected top be made official later today and now the vehicle had been leaked ahead of the official unveiling. According to BMW, the all-wheel-drive system, which BMW calls xDrive, can be specified in rear-drive configuration with traction control systems reduced-or completely disabled. Virtually every 5 Series suspension component was modified to M-spec levels-including the Variable Damping Control and multi-mode Servotronic electro-mechanical steering gear - to ensure superior dynamics and stability under all conditions.

Although BMW lovers might not enjoy the idea of an M5 with xDrive, the fact that there's an option to send power only to the rear wheels should appease the masses.

You could say: "Wow, the new BMW M5 has become impossibly complicated for a sport sedan, now".

With power figures climbing beyond the useable limits of two driven wheels, the new M5 has followed the lead of its arch rival, the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, and introduced a switchable all-wheel drive system to effectively harness its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8.

BMW's new super sedan passes 200km/h in just 11.1sec on its way to a limited 250km/h top speed, which can be increased to 305km/h when the M Driver's Package is optioned. We also noticed the new alloys and even the mirror caps are different.

The automaker announced that the 2018 BMW M5 will arrive in the US next year-sometime after February, but before June-to patient hands willing to likely pay more than six figures for the privilege. The driver can use a button to adjust the engine sound as desired.

Braking performance comes from standard M compound brakes, six-piston fixed calipers up front, and single-piston floating calipers in the rear. Other weight-saving measures include a weight-optimized active exhaust, an aluminum hood, and a roof that uses carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

When it goes on sale in spring 2018, the M5 will initially be offered in a "First Edition" trim that adds a numbered plaque, 20-inch wheels, red paint and white leather. Occupants are treated to Merino leather upholstery, with the driver and front passenger getting M sports seats with electric adjustment, heating, and embossed M logos on the head restraints.

Coincidentally, the first M-branded BMW apart from the M1 was also a 5 Series, which was fitted with the... drum rolls, BMW M1 engine. It will be exclusively appointed and features BMW Individual Frozen Dark Red Metallic paintwork (seen in the gallery above) and will cost an additional €19,500 ($23,046 USD) over the standard model.
