Vector Disease Control International, a private company contracted by the city, has confirmed the city's seventh and eighth positive West Nile Virus mosquito traps for 2017, according to a city news release.

While there are now no active cases of the Zika virus, which can cause harmful birth defects, in Florida thr Florida Department of Health is still urging residents to take preventative measures to avoid mosquito bites, which is the best way to prevent contracting the Zika virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

"West Nile is always a concern in the late summer, early fall here in North Dakota", Iszler said.

There are no medications to prevent West Nile Virus; however, most people infected exhibit no symptoms.

WNV is most commonly transmitted to humans by the bite of a mosquito infected with the virus.

Symptoms may show up suddenly, with a high fever and headache. It is fatal to horses in 90 percent of cases. There is no vaccine for West Nile and there's no treatment beyond alleviating symptoms.

Use insect repellents when you go outdoors.

Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours: The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many mosquitoes.

Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers when outdoors.

Brizendine said the best way for everyone to help fight the mosquito situation is by dumping standing water after every rainfall. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m- toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions on the product label. "The mosquitos carrying the virus in Washington County were trapped at the Weiser Bass Pond located about 1.5 miles west of Weiser city limits".
