The latest entrant is Facebook who is not contemplating on the idea, as it has already started working on the project.
Facebook is developing a Smart Speaker with a 15-inch display for release early next year, reports DigiTimes.
The report goes on to cite that Pegatron, one of Apple's primary iPhone assembly partners, has been tapped to manufacture the device for Facebook, which will supposedly be ready for release sometime in 2018.
Facebook (FB) must be feeling left out of the smart speaker market. If the product comes to fruition, users can no doubt expect deep Facebook integration, video calls, Facebook Live broadcasting ability, and more. By 2022, the smart speaker market is expected to reach US$5.5 billion. What's really interesting about the alleged Facebook speaker is that it will seek to distinguish itself from contemporary voice-operated speakers by featuring a built-in 15-inch touch display, instead of focusing on a wholly voice-operated setup. However, Facebook's concept has a bigger screen that will offer more functionalities. The device has already begun small volume of pilot production at Pegatron's plants in China.
Further information about Facebook's smart speaker, such as the anticipated price and name, weren't provided. Amazon seems to be working on stealing Apple's thunder who is working on its music-oriented smart speaker - HomePod, priced at $350.
