Manchester United may step up their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder, Nemanja Matic, in the coming days as the Sun reports that club president, Roman Abramovich, has sanctioned the transfer of the 28 year old defensive midfield maestro to Old Trafford.
Starsport understands Jose Mourinho is a big admirer of the Serbia global and wants to reunite with the 28-year-old. As a result, a move to United would of course be less preferable than a switch to Juventus, who are also credited with an interest, but much depends on the figures involved and Matic's desire. But so far, Matic has not moved any closer to either, with Chelsea holding firm on the £40-50m asking price.
Matic wants to quit Stamford Bridge after growing concerned over a lack of first team football due to the arrival of Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco. When United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward first approached Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy - and put forward a preliminary offer of £25m - he was told, in no uncertain terms, that Dier was not for sale.
Despite claims that Chelsea may have been upset with United swooping for Romelu Lukaku, Abramovich and Blues boss Antonio Conte have secured the services of Alvaro Morata and will allow Matic to move to Old Trafford.
Club legend Gary Pallister has stated that Manchester United need to pull out all the stops to sign Nemanja Matic.
And Pallister says Matic would be the flawless signing for United but he doubts the Blues will let him go.
"Matic is a physical presence and apart from [Marouane] Fellaini we have quite a small midfield", Pallister said, as quoted on the London Evening Standard.
