Was gunman ready to head home before congressman's shooting?

Scalise was honored Thursday night during the annual congressional baseball game.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Paul Ryan and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi stood side by side to shout: "Let's play ball!" and the crowd chanted "U-S-A!" Hodgkinson died after being shot by police.

Instead of wearing hats representing their home teams, as is the normal tradition, this year players on both teams wore Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, for part of the game.

Scalise will require additional operations, Sava said, adding that it's hard to predict how long he will be in the hospital.

"Congressman Steve Scalise is in serious condition", the statement from MedStar Washington Hospital said.

Sava declined to put a timeline on when that would happen, or when Scalise, 51, would be able to leave the hospital.

Scalise remains in critical condition at a hospital near the Capitol and has undergone multiple surgeries.

Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone. He has received multiple units of blood transfusion.

A list of names - including some Republican members of Congress - was found with the Alexandria shooter, according to a law enforcement source and Rep. Mo Brooks, who was on the list and present at the practice but unharmed by the shooting.

The bullet entered Scalise's left hip and tore through his pelvis, breaking bones, injuring organs and causing severe bleeding. Once it has lodged in bone or muscle, "it's not going to do anything".

Doctors "fully expect him to walk", Sava said, "and hopefully run".

"He will certainly be in the hospital for a considerable period of time", he said.

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Sava said. The congressman's risk of death was now substantially lower because doctors have controlled the bleeding and his vital signs have stabilized.

Numerous players in the congressional game Thursday night are wearing Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a graduate of the school, as they assemble at Nationals Park in Washington.

"There is more risk involved in removing them". Sava says Scalise has responded to family members while he's still under sedation.

Sue Hodgkinson told reporters outside her IL home Thursday that she was busy with her job and didn't know a lot about what her husband, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, did between January and March.

Speaking earlier Friday in Miami, Trump said Scalise "took a bullet for all of us" when he was shot.

The president said that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".

"So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you", Trump added. Hodgkinson maintained a social media presence that was pro-Bernie Sanders and anti-Republican.

Authorities also confirm Hodgkinson legally purchased a 9 mm handgun and an assault-style rifle from licensed firearms sellers. Griner remains hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.
