Anthony Bostick, 28, who shot Amthor in the left shoulder, was found dead in the Abbey Lane residence in Maybrook where police went in the morning for a report of a domestic dispute between Bostick and his girlfriend. While speaking with the suspect, there was an exchange of gunfire, and the officer was hit in the shoulder, Tripodo said. Amthor doubles as town and village police chief.
Orange County officials say Chief Arnold "Butch" Amthor was shot around 9:20 a.m.in Maybrook, a village of about 3,000 residents just west of Stewart International Airport.
Troopers say the extent of the officer's injuries aren't known.
The suspect is now barricaded in a residence, which was still ongoing later Tuesday morning with New York State Troopers on the scene.
Neuhaus said he visited Amthor at the hospital.
State police said in a statement that "a subject" is barricaded in a home.
Police haven't identified the man or said how he died.
Police at the scene after the shooting included SWAT teams from Orange and Sullivan counties, state police and officers from several municipal departments. The suspect is barricaded in his home in the town of Maybrook.
