Community honors peace officers

"These are just a few of the many heroes we honor today", said Sterling, of the Lake Havasu City Police Department, during remarks at Wednesday morning's Peace Officers Memorial service outside the Bullhead City Police Department.

The public is invited, but parking will be limited. The service is taking part at 11025 Voyager Parkway in Colorado Springs.

Seventh-grader Sam Hendrix will give the speech this year.

The White House was lit up in blue Monday night to honor law enforcement. Along with High Point officers were their family members, recruits in basic law enforcement training, community members and Greensboro police officers.

Each name of a fallen officer from the city, county and state police was read aloud.

"May we never forget the ultimate sacrifice made by these fearless men and women", retired sheriff's deputy and Goodview Mayor Steve Baumgart said at the Law Enforcement Memorial Day ceremony, which included Winona police, Winona County Sheriff's deputies and Minnesota state troopers, along with city and county officials.

May 15 is a day for those we serve to remember the sacrifices made by the men and women who are career police officers. Dowd said, "In a sense, they are fighting a war, and that war is a war on an ever-growing criminal population that is mainly funded by the use and sale of illegal drugs".

Authorities have released the name of a man who was killed when a tornado tore through a mobile home park in northwestern Wisconsin.

Deputy Mason's senseless murder brought to 50 the number of officers killed in the line of duty already from January 1 through May 16 this year.

National Police Week began in 1962 and for years Pittsfield has held a ceremony. Over the course of time, I have also served as a probation/parole officer, prison warden and now as USA marshal for the District of Idaho. Please take time to express it during National Police Week and all year long.

"Over the coming weeks and months we will be encouraging our own officers and staff to run fundraising events to support the appeal, and we would be delighted if members of the public would consider doing the same".

McCollum reminded those in attendance of the deaths of local law enforcement officials since 2000, when Mark Hiatt of the Bryan Police Department was killed in a motorcycle crash.

I'd like to say thank you to all law enforcement officers here in Moffat County, both retired and still working.

"We're here to celebrate and remember. all that they were, all that they did and all that they stood for", Sterling said. "This Police Week, we owe them more than gratitude - we must do all we can to support the men and women that selflessly serve our communities and country every single day".

The Candlelight vigil is one of many commemorative events taking place in the nation's capital during National Police Week 2017.
