NCAA hockey regional to return in 2019

"Being selected to host the 2018 and 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Regionals is a great honor and we are excited for the positive impact it will have on our community".

The NCAA announced the host sites for both the Men's and Women's Frozen Fours for 2019-2022 on Tuesday. The 2018 Regionals will be held the weekend of March 23-25 and the 2019 Regionals will take place March 29-31. The facility holds 8,420 for hockey and is the home of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL, the NHL's top minor-league system.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host several NCAA Championships", athletic director Sandy Barbour said in a news release.

Over the past four tournaments (since 2014) nine different cities have hosted an NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Regional including and Cincinnati, Ohio (three times), Providence, R.I.

The University of Pittsburgh was also chosen to host several championship events that Penn State faithful might be interested in - including the men's hockey Frozen Four in 2021, the wrestling national championships in 2019 and the women's volleyball national title game in 2019. Another suggestion was to have one division named "South" and the other one "Souther.' I guess we can't throw stones, you know, with the whole 'Legends and Leaders" deal. The NCAA hockey selection process for the 16-team field is a cold and lifeless computer model that is well-known and followed completely. The city bid for the hosting rights earlier this year. The PPL Center will provide a fun tournament atmosphere for the NCAA men's hockey regionals in Allentown. The Nittany Lion basketball team defeated Drexel in the PPL Center in December 2014.

The downtown Allentown arena, which has a standing-room capacity of over 9,000, will host the 2018 and 2019 NCAA Men's Hockey Midwest Regionals with Penn State University serving as the host institution.

Rec Hall will again host a national collegiate women's gymnastics regional on April 4, 2020. "The last time we hosted in 2009 it was a big hit".
