The NCAA announced its site designations for 2018-2022 on Tuesday for volleyball, ice hockey and wrestling.
"It is a tremendous honor for the city of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh to be chosen as hosts of the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships", Pitt Athletic Director Heather Lyke said in a press release.
After the Division III meet was hosted in Conroe, Texas this past season, the meet will move to the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana, before camping in Greensboro for the next two seasons. "There are so few opportunities for an NCAA championship event to be played on or near a campus, so we don't take this lightly".
Smith said the city's success in expanding the relationships with the addition of football and golf championships hosted in Shenandoah is exciting for all involved.
Auburn University will host three NCAA championship events within the 2018-2022 championship bid cycle in the sports of women's golf, men's golf and gymnastics, the NCAA announced Tuesday.
UMHB will also co-host the 2019 and 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Golf National Championships.
The only other championship awarded to Kansas City was women's bowling, which will be hosted by AMF Pro Bowl in North Kansas City in 2021 with Central Missouri as the bid partner.
The number of championships Pittsburgh was awarded is a product of a more concerted effort to attract large events to a city not necessarily known for them. The last time St. Louis hosted the Frozen Four was 2007 at Scottrade.
UW will also host the NCAA Great Lakes cross country regional in 2019. "Pittsburgh and PPG Paints Arena have all the amenities to host a first-class championship featuring world-class competitors".
This will be the fifth time the NCAA men's basketball tournament will come to the CenturyLink Center. The first and second rounds of March Madness will be played at Golden 1 Center on March 20 and 22, 2020.
