Braves beat Padres 5-2 on opening night at new stadium


The post-game fireworks that illuminated the sky above SunTrust Park were a nice touch Friday, but the night was electric long before that as the Atlanta Braves ushered in their new stadium with a 5-2 over the San Diego Padres.

After almost two decades in South Atlanta's Turner Field, the Atlanta Braves played ball in their new home, Sun Trust Park.

The Braves' most distinguished fans, former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, attended the game.

Dickey (1-1), who left Toronto to sign an $8 million, one-year contract with the Braves, gave up two runs and seven hits in six-plus innings with six strikeouts. In addition to his two-run homer, Inciarte had a leadoff infield single and scored the Braves' first of two runs in the opening inning.

Although Garcia lasted just five innings at Miami on Wednesday, the bullpen worked four scoreless innings behind him and the Braves rallied for a 5-4 victory that snapped a five-game losing streak. An area geared toward children has a zip line and a climbing wall.

Freeman said walking into the stadium from the mixed-use development "is the big wow factor". The Braves tout that the area, which includes housing, restaurants, a live music theater and retail, as "the first of its kind - a destination that will simultaneously build and integrate a state-of-the-art Major League Baseball ballpark with a multi-use development and community".

"There weren't too many cheap homers at Turner Field", Jones said.

Early reports indicated that the much-feared traffic pileup that many envisioned never materialized as vehicles flowed freely around Cobb Parkway onto Interstate 285 and 75 without little problems. "Hopefully now we can get on a good roll here and continue to play good baseball". Now, he'll get the nod in the second game at SunTrust Park. Repairs are targeted to be completed in June. Saturday's game against the Padres starts at 7:10 p.m. Dickey gets the start Saturday, followed by Bartolo Colon on Sunday and Jaime Garcia on Monday.
