Trump reveals plans for 'aesthetically pleasing' border wall

"Through the construction of prototypes, CBP will partner with industry to identify the best means and methods to construct border wall before making a more substantial investment in construction". Some 650 miles are already fenced.

Three of the most famous historical walls are now mainly in ruins: the Great Wall of China, Hadrian's Wall, and the Berlin Wall.

According to one document posted online by U.S. Customs and Border Protection Friday night, the wall should be 30 feet high, built using concrete, and "physically imposing".

The CBP solicitation has many requirements for contractors, including a height of at least 18 feet and that the wall be made to deter any punching through the wall with hand-held items like a sledgehammer or welding torch for 30 minutes.

The little walls are supposed to be strong.

The request says that for at least 30 minutes (though ideally for more than four hours), the border wall should be able to resist attempts to make holes in it with a "sledgehammer, auto jack, pick axe, chisel, battery operated impact tools, battery operated cutting tools, Oxy/acetylene torch or other similar hand-held tools". Once the government has determined a model, the prototypes may be demolished.

Both should be "aesthetically pleasing in color" and texture consistent with the general environment, but only from the north side.

"The north side of wall (i.e. US facing side) shall be aesthetically pleasing in color, anti-climb texture, etc., to be consistent with general surrounding environment", reads the RFP.

With all the other crises assailing us, there has been a hiatus in the debate over the Mexican border wall. "Obviously the wall construction is an offense to Mexico". Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) said in January that the wall would cost between $12 billion and $15 billion, though other estimates have put the price tag as high $25 billion.

The estimated cost to complete the 2008 joint agreement titled "Hidalgo County Border Infrastructure Improvement Program", is projected to be just over $611 million, with the county paying about 10 percent of the total cost, according to the letter approved by the board of directors during the last commissioner's court. Those two phases would cost $5 billion.

This week the president sent a budget proposal to Congress that included a $2.6 billion down payment for the wall.

"The President has plans to cut vital programs that enrich our community and keep us health and secure redirecting those funds to finance a costly and senseless border wall between us that divides us...and our strong allies in Mexico should be offended by this as we are", Gonzalez said Saturday during a roundtable discussion at La Union Del Pueblo Entero sitting alongside Minority House Leader Nancy Pelosi. The Mexican government has rejected the possibility.

But amid intense political pressure, on March 16 the company confirmed that it would not be involved in the project.

At the same time, the agency has asked bidders to explain how they will meet the agency's goals to deliver contracts to small, minority and veteran owned companies.

The issuance of two bid requests suggests that the government is looking at a combination of wall types for the border, much of which is in rural, rugged terrain.

Cuevas, the head of the Senate foreign relations committee, said negotiations were also under way to amend existing laws on public works projects and government purchases to exert similar pressure.
