Monopoly says RIP to the thimble, boot and wheelbarrow

The thimble, wheelbarrow and boot tokens will now be replaced with a penguin, rubber ducky and Tyrannosaurus rex, the Associated Press reports.

The refreshed group of tokens will arrive on store shelves with the newest Monopoly game this fall.

At the other end of the spectrum, the boot received 83,000 votes, the thimble received 81,000 votes and the poor wheelbarrow received 60,000.

Hasbro held a worldwide vote to decide the fate of the current Monopoly tokens.

At the start of the year, Hasbro announced it was putting the future of Monopoly into the hands of people on the internet. Today, the results of that vote are in.

The move is part of a broader campaign to update the board game based in part on votes by consumers during a promotional period earlier this year.

Hasbro said it picked these eight tokens by a vote of 4.3 million fans, from 146 countries, who considered a field of 64 contenders.

If it waddles like a penguin, quacks like a duck and stomps like a T-Rex, you know you're playing Monopoly! The classic hat and auto came next, with the ducky, cat, penguin and battleship rounding out the top list. The cat, which replaced the iron in 2013, is still kicking. Voters could choose from over 50 options, including old standards like the top hat and Scottie dog, and more modern designs like a hashtag and emoji.

The Scottie dog, top hat, car, battleship and Hazel the cat remain in the lineup.

But this is not the first time Monopoly has given its fans the opportunity to tweak the game.

The T-Rex garnered the second most votes of any token. The announcement comes just ahead of World Monopoly Day on March 19.
