Waheed said had asked the court to issue orders against the promotion of Valentine's Day because he believed print and electronic media had been presenting the day as if it was part of local culture.

The court passed its ruling to the ministry, federal government, chairman and chief commissioner, who are obliged to submit a response to the order within ten days.

In Malaysia, where Muslims make up more than half of the population, Islamic morality police have raided hotels and parks on February 14, looking for couples whom they consider to be too immodest.
The ban applies only to Pakistan's capital as the Islamabad high court has no jurisdiction beyond the city.
Many businesses, especially restaurants, florists and bakeries, advertise promotions for the holiday.
They issued the order Monday to go in immediate effect.
The celebrations were banned past year in Kohat, a city in the northwestern part of the country.
"This protest was organized as we have seen on television that Valentine's Day tends to be associated with free sex", said organizer Pandu Satria.
"The Valentine Day has no place in our tradition and values", the city's resolution read a year ago, when officials branded it as "vulgar and indecent".
