After Trump's victory, however, Democrats have changed their tune.
The colorful and at time incendiary rallies Trump hosted became signature stops throughout the Republican primary and the general election campaign, as were the consistent presence of comparatively small but vocal groups of protesters who demonstrated in and around his events.
First, they blame their losses on a uniquely unpopular presidential candidate, despite the fact that Hillary Clinton is hardly alone among recent Democratic nominees in her inability to connect with the public.
Trump initially gave a good answer, which was that he is focused on jobs and health care and would consider the Clinton issue later.
But it is not clear whether Trump will take questions there.
One woman, dressed in a graduation cap and gown, projected into the megaphone, "I'm not a rapist, I'm not a criminal".
"Just to put a little bit of this into perspective in terms of the expectations", Deitz said, "Democrats were hopeful that they could, in fact, flip control of the Senate".
Huh? The person he called Crooked Hillary? This was not the behavior of a man who deserved to sit in the highest office of the land, and news networks and people everywhere echoed this sentiment. In an interview with The New York Times, Trump indicated that he would not be pursuing a criminal investigation against Clinton or the Clinton Foundation for the former secretary of State's use of a private email server.
"We have to face the truth: 53 percent of our white sisters went into the voting booths and voted for Donald Trump", Willford said. Most will recall that raucous Trump supporters spent much of election night gleefully chanting, "Lock her up".
In 2016, 18 of the 21 most educated states went for Hillary Clinton. That's not exactly what he said if his comments are weighed in their entirety, but such are the ways of media groupthink. Clinton campaign counsel Marc Elias released a Medium post explaining the reasons for getting involved.
"What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records - probably 2 million, it could be even 3 million - we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate", Trump said. Grow up and start working at getting things where they need to be.
The wall was arguably Trump's biggest and most talked about policies. "And we have to spend time there". Trump played to the fears of many socially conservative Americans by suggesting women should be punished for getting abortions, and hinting he wanted to repeal same-sex marriage.
In a flawless world the Justice Department, purged of its current crop of political hacks, would allow the FBI (which was recently ordered to "stand down" its probe of the Clinton Foundation) to conduct an honest and unshackled investigation. The type of leaders who will reassert America's rightful place in the world, who will stand with our allies, deter our enemies, and Make America Great Again here at home. The assertion is they abused a government position for substantial financial gain, and risked national security to do it. To argue that her gender was an insurmountable obstacle is to underweight everything her name connotes for many Americans. So numerous things that people like me thought were insane, too crazy to permit a win for Trump - the exaggerations, the nonsense, the closet bigotry, the conspiracy theories and more - will be remembered as legitimate.
